It is well known that cutting Titanium is a very abrasive process and that tool life is limited. Coatings can be applied to increase or extend tool life, reducing cutting edge wear by up to 50% in some cases. Our recent study has showed with a Carbide Endmill Ap=12mm Rpm=1592 applied at 225mm per minute that an un-coated tool had a wear pattern of around 80 microns after 80 minutes.
The wear pattern was drastically reduced once the same feeds and speeds were applied to a coated Carbide Tool when after 80 minutes of use only 40 microns of wear was produced..!!!
